History of the Cartier Santos

The Cartier Santos was created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Brazilian Santos-Dumont needed a reliable and easily readable watch whilst piloting. Fiddling with a pocket watch was out of the question, resulting in Cartier's innovation in the form of the first commercially-sold wristwatch. The design was defined by its square shape with gently curved lugs. Officially launched in 1911, this innovative watch marked a significant departure from the pocket watches of the era and would significantly influence the evolution of the modern wristwatch.

Design and Features of the Cartier Santos

The Cartier Santos is renowned for its bold and recognizable design. Key features include:

  • Square Case: The signature square case with rounded edges was a distinctive feature in an era of round pocket watches and was amongst the first of its kind.
  • Visible Screws: The bezel features visible screws, which not only serve a functional purpose but serve as an homage to the industrial era of Paris at the time.
  • Roman Numerals: Classic Roman numeral hour markers contribute to the watch’s timeless appeal.
  • Sword-Shaped Hands: Blued steel or luminescent sword-shaped hands are a hallmark of Cartier's design.
  • Sapphire Cabochon: The crown is often set with a sapphire cabochon, adding a touch of luxury. This flash of colour is a classic Cartier design feature.
