Charles Dickens: A Literary Giant

Born in 1812, Charles Dickens had a tumultuous childhood that profoundly influenced his writing. Rising from humble beginnings, he became one of the first authors to achieve fame through serialized publications and readers eagerly waited for the next installment of his stories. Dickens's famed works include A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and David Copperfield. These novels explore themes of redemption, social injustice, and the complexity of human nature and his characters embody both the struggles and triumphs of the human experience. This level of relatability has contributed to his lasting popularity, while at the same time offering a glimpse into life during the Victorian era.

The novella quickly became a classic, delighting readers with its themes of compassion, generosity, and redemption. At its core, A Christmas Carol emphasizes the importance of kindness and the potential for personal transformation. Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in the span of only a few weeks - six to be exact! The story was inspired partly by his own life. His wealth and success contrasted sharply with his humble beginnings growing up in poverty. The story was in part inspired by his visit to Saffron Hill school, a British religious school for poor children. The neglect and conditions that the children were subjected to shocked and horrified Dickens. Tiny Tim serves as a reminder of the harsh environments that poor children were exposed to in the Victorian era. The importance of values such as goodness and charity remind readers of what is important during the holiday season, making A Christmas Carol a timeless classic.

Publication of A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol was first published by Chapman & Hall on December 19, 1843, less than a week before Christmas. The full title of A Christmas Carol is actually A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas. The novella was an instant success and the first edition sold out right away, selling 6,000 copies by Christmas Eve! The book ended up going through thirteen printings within a year’s time. It went on to sell over 2 million copies in America alone over the course of a century. Despite its impressive sales, the book was actually a financial disaster for Dickens. He agreed to be paid on commission by the publisher so that he could publish the book as he pleased. He had the book published in a costly fine binding, with special paper, gilt lettering and eight color engravings. The cost was astronomical and the book didn’t make a significant profit for many years. In a way the publication story follows the themes of the book itself - Dickens shouldered the cost so that readers could own an exceptionally beautiful copy for a mere five shillings.
