The Cartier Ballon Bleu is one of Cartier's most popular watches, despite being one of the younger models in their illustrious range. Our guide will explain why this perfect design has become a favourite for women and men alike.

Introduction to the Cartier Ballon Bleu

The Cartier Ballon Bleu is for many the embodiment of Cartier luxury watchmaking, perfectly blending form and function. Known for its distinctive round case and sophisticated design, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier has quickly become one of the brand's most popular collections since its introduction. It's also one of those rarer models that retains a broad appeal among both men and women, reflecting its sophisticated design and the range of sizes available.

As well as its aesthetic appeal it's also simply an extremely comfortable watch, due to that trademark rounded case, combined with the quality of construction Cartier is known for. The popularity of the Ballon Bleu means there is an extensive secondary market available, with many models attractively priced. Sotheby's specialists handpick each Cartier Ballon Bleu we offer, whether that's through one of our auctions or buy-now offering, meaning you can trust us when investing in an iconic Ballon Bleu.

History of the Cartier Ballon Bleu

The Ballon Bleu de Cartier was launched in 2007, adding a fresh, contemporary twist to Cartier’s prestigious lineup. The name "Ballon Bleu" translates to "Blue Balloon," inspired by the unique blue sapphire cabochon crown that appears as if it’s floating on the side of the watch, encased in a protective arch.

The soft rounded shape of the Cartier Ballon Bleu also offered a nice contrast to the longstanding rectangular models in the Cartier watch range like the Cartier Tank and Cartier Santos. It also makes it a very comfortable watch for day-to-day wear.

Design and Features

The Cartier Ballon Bleu is renowned for its elegant and innovative design. Key features include:

  • Rounded Case: The perfectly rounded case is a departure from the traditional rectangular shapes seen in other Cartier collections. It offers a modern, elegant look.
  • Blue Sapphire Cabochon: The crown is adorned with a blue sapphire cabochon, which is seamlessly integrated into the case design. This flash of colour is a classic Cartier design feature.
  • Roman Numerals: The classic Roman numeral hour markers are slightly distorted by the curvature of the case, adding a unique visual effect.
  • Guilloché Dial: Many Ballon Bleu models feature a guilloché dial, showcasing Cartier’s commitment to exquisite craftsmanship.
  • Sword-Shaped Hands: The blue steel hands are a signature detail of Cartier watches.
  • Versatile Strap Options: Available with both metal bracelets and leather straps, allowing for a personalized touch.

Variations of the Cartier Ballon Bleu

The Ballon Bleu de Cartier collection offers a range of variations to suit different tastes and styles. Some of the notable models include:

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Small Model

A classic example of the ladies Cartier Ballon Bleu format, this 28mm watch in pink gold represented excellent value at $12,600. Offered in our New York sale in 2021.

Designed for those who prefer a more delicate and refined timepiece, the small model often comes with a 28mm or 33mm case. It retains all the signature features of the Cartier Ballon Bleu collection, making it an ideal choice for smaller wrists.

Whilst Cartier Ballon Bleu watches are best known for the trademark Cartier silver dial, the French brand also excels at distinctive coloured dials. This example is available through our Buy-Now offering, which at $4,500 offers excellent value for a high quality, timeless design.

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Medium Model

The Cartier Ballon Bleu in rose gold works perfectly with a contrasting leather strap (black in this case). This example was sold by our Hong Kong team.

The medium model, typically with a 36mm case, offers a balanced size that is versatile for both men and women. It maintains the elegance of the Ballon Bleu design while providing a more substantial presence on the wrist.

An excellent choice for those searching for a luxurious Cartier Ballon Bleu, this Reference 3271 possesses a facade entirely adorned with pavé-set diamonds in 18-karat pink gold. Sold in our Spring 2023 Important Watches sale for HKD330,200.

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Large Model

Originally part of our 2022 Fine Watches Auction, this classic pink gold Reference 2999 Ballon Bleu sits within a beautiful metal bracelet. The lot sold for $20,160 USD, over $5,000 above its high estimate.

With a case size of 42mm or larger, the large model caters to those who prefer a more prominent timepiece. This model often includes additional complications such as chronographs or tourbillons (see below), enhancing its functionality and appeal.

This classic Cartier Ballon Bleu in steel was sold by Sotheby's in May this year in our London auction. Selling for £4,560, it actually formed part of a lady's large watch and jewellery collection, demonstrating the versatility of the larger Cartier Tank format.

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Fine & Rare Models

At Sotheby's we frequently offer rare examples of well known watches through our global auction network. The Hong Kong team brought this extraordinary Cartier Ballon Bleu to market back in 2017. This white gold and diamond-set example was number 7/25 and featured an enamel dial with panther motif.

Cartier has a long tradition of creating visually stunning and technically complex pieces, with Sotheby's selling many examples over the decades across both our jewelry and watch departments. The Cartier Ballon Bleu is one such example of Cartier taking a highly popular model and elevating it with striking designs, using techniques like intricate enamel dials and diamond-setting.

Continuing the animal theme, this striking Ballon Bleu again combined white gold, diamond setting and an enamel dial to extraordinary effect. This elephant motif example was also brought to market by our Hong Kong specialists.

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Complications

Cartier also uses the Ballon Bleu to showcase its technical prowess, incorporating a range of complications. Sotheby's experts have brought many of these to market, a selection of which we showcase below.

Cartier Ballon Bleu - Chronograph

The Ballon Bleu Chronograph adds a dynamic aspect to the collection with its ability to measure elapsed time. Whilst adding technical complexity the design still retains Cartier's trademark elegance. For the quality of design on offer and technicial capability, these Ballon Bleu variants offer compelling value.

This stunning pink gold Cartier Ballon Bleu included chronograph functionality and date. This sold in one of our online Hong Kong sales in June 2019.

Cartier Ballon Bleu Tourbillon

The Cartier Ballon Bleu Tourbillon showcases Cartier's mastery in haute horlogerie, featuring the mesmerizing tourbillon complication. The tourbillon, which counters the effects of gravity for improved accuracy, is beautifully displayed through an open aperture on the dial. This model is typically crafted from precious metals like rose gold or platinum and can includes diamond accents, making it a truly luxurious and sophisticated timepiece.

In 2008, Cartier introduced the Ballon Bleu flying tourbillon, its first ever watch bearing the Geneva Seal. The model quickly established its formidable presence in the iconography of the luxury watches brand. This amazing example sold in our Dubai sale in 2019.

Cartier Ballon Bleu Dual Time

The Cartier Ballon Bleu Dual-Time is designed for the modern traveler, offering the practicality of tracking two time zones simultaneously. In reality this is a grand complication movement, demonstrating Cartier's exceptional craftsmanship. Whilst rare, Sotheby's Cartier specialists occasionally offer these extraordinary watches through our global auction network.

This exceptional Cartier was revealed in 2013. The elegant Ballon Bleu case protects a grand complication movement. In addition to the tourbillon, the watch works like a regulator with the central minutes and the two subsidiary dials for local and second time indication. Cartier realized a tour de force as this piece is a double jump hour, with each hour hand jumping at the start of a new hour. Requiring the highest level of expertise, only 50 pieces were produced in total, this lot being No. 22.
