Sotheby's have this week announced the upcoming sales from The Private Collection of the Late Sir Joseph Hotung. Amongst the 400 works on offer are a choice selection of Old Master Paintings and British Works on Paper. This includes paintings by Frans Hals and Studio, Luis Meléndez, Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Jacob van Hulsdonck, Thomas Patch and watercolours by J.M.W. Turner.
One of the highlights of the Part 2: London Evening sale on 7th December 2022 will be Portrait of a man, three-quarter-length, wearing black with a white collar by Frans Hals and Studio (pictured). This oil on canvas has been upgraded since being published in 1974, and will feature in Professor Claus Grimm's forthcoming updated catalogue raisonné of Hals' work. Professor Grimm now dates the work to c. 1634-35 and endorses Hals's authorship along with a member of his studio. Click on the link above to read the full catalogue note.
