The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art have recently published Paris A. Spies-Gans’ new book entitled A Revolution on Canvas – The Rise of Women Artists in Britain and France, 1760-1830. This publication, which might be one of the most anticipated art history books of the year, draws heavily on new research and statistical analysis on the subject of women artists during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Sotheby’s have recently handled several fascinating works by women artists of the same period, including Katherine Read, Anne Vallayer-Coster, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Angelica Kauffmann. Another notable and recent example was a portrait of the British sculptor Anne Seymour by Daniel Gardner which was sold in these rooms in July 2021.
