Compton Verney in Warwickshire has announced that it will be hosting an exhibition in 2023 dedicated to the ‘Master of the Countess of Warwick’, an unidentified portrait painter who worked in Tudor England. Sir Roy Strong dubbed this ‘Master’ in connection with a Portrait of Anne Russell, Countess of Warwick (1548/9-1604) preserved in the collection of the Dukes of Bedford at Woburn Abbey. This exhibition promises to focus on the various questions, problems and approaches to attributing pictures to the artist.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from 4 February–7 May 2023.

Sotheby’s have handled several portraits by this unknown master during the past decades. The most recent example, which displays the characteristic fascination for details in costume and jewellery, was sold here in London during our December 2021 sale.
