Collector Worthy Vintage Hermès Bag
Sotheby’s Holiday Handbags auction in New York is underway, with bidding set to close on December 5th. Along with the myriad of store-fresh and recently released Hermès bags available, we also have a spectacular selection of rare collector Hermès vintage bags. Our specialist, Max Brownawell, explains his favorites:
Hermès Birkin 30: An Ostrich of its Era
One of the most eye-catching bags in this auction is the Ostrich Birkin 30 from 2002 in Vert Anis body and Tangerine details, Lot 30. This combination, which in leather would be Vert Cru and Orange H, is one that defines the early 2000’s for Hermès. The brand’s classic Orange (inspired by the orange boxes) was a big hit at the time, and pairing it with green is rare and unusual. This rare bag is also No Reserve so don't miss your chance to own this citrus inspired early 2000's ostrich Birkin bag.
Hermès Kelly 28, Ostrich Outside/Inside
Most Hermès bags are lined with Chevre leather, sometimes Swift, sometimes Agneau, but it is a pretty hard rule that exotic bags are lined with leather. So when I first opened up Lot 37, a Kelly 28 from 1985, my jaw dropped. The lining of this bag is Ostrich just like the exterior! Recently refurbished by Hermès, with fresh Plaques and handle attachments, the rarity of this bag cannot be overstated.
Hermès Sacs a Malice
From 1989 to 1991 Hermès produced a series of thirty-or-so bags with varying designs. Dubbed the Sac a Malice or Bag of Tricks, these bags have become very collectible, and certain styles are more rare than others. The pair offered in our Holiday auction, Lot 70 and Lot 114, are great examples, the snowman or Bonhomme de Neige is particularly rare and exciting to find. The Snowman Sac a Malice is the perfect holiday gift for the vintage Hermès collector.
Hermès Kelly Doll: First Edition
First introduced in 2000 the Kelly Doll or Qulle Idole has become a must-have for Hermès collectors everywhere. This Hermès Kelly Doll in Rouge H, Lot 45, is from the design’s first year of production, making this a very early example. Endlessly expressive, their eyes can roll, their arms can bend, and their mouth functions as a tiny exterior pocket. Don't miss this first edition Hermès Kelly Doll.
