Chinese Jades from the Xianquxuan Collection 26 November–5 December 2023 • 11:00 AM HKT • Hong Kong

D r. Frank Chan, Master of the Xianquxuan, is a collector of immense passion and discernment. Over many years, he has amassed an eclectic and vast collection of Chinese art spanning ceramics from across the dynasties, lacquerware, gold, stone, and jade, to Ming dynasty furniture and scholars' objects. Each piece is a testament to his exacting taste and connoisseurial depth.

Frank’s character is marked by a humble elegance, a testament to his deep-seated love for Chinese culture. His astute appreciation for antiques has led him on countless journeys, in China and abroad, each trip attesting to his unyielding quest for artistic treasures. His frequent encounters in Japan are particularly noteworthy, and his hands-on approach to appreciating these artifacts exemplifies his dedication.

Possessing an unwavering committment to his studies, Frank's diligence is remarkable. He delves deep into research, often until dawn, his curiosity seemingly insatiable. Yet, his knowledge is not jealously guarded. On the contrary, he is generous in sharing his insights, and frequently engages in intellectual exchange with scholars and fellow collectors. This constant interaction has built a rich tapestry of connections, and his enthusiasm for it remains undiminished.

Frank embodies the essence of Su Dongpo's words: “The landscape and the moonlight have no permanent master. The idle one is the master.” He finds solace in moments of stillness amidst his busy schedule, reflecting the refined tastes of a true gentleman. His journey, though idle in nature, is filled with interest, revealing the path of utmost simplicity.

I am fortunate to have known Frank for more than 30 years. We share a deep love for collecting antiques, a common interest that has fostered a profound friendship. Our exchanges and mutual learning have enriched both our lives, bringing immense joy and fulfillment.

Dr. Chan, the owner of Xianquxuan, originally came from Jinjiang, Fujian, whose family had immigrated to the Philippines in the early years, with businesses spread across Southeast Asia. Dr. Chan himself settled in Hong Kong and developed a profound love for Chinese art, exploring a wide range of genres from scholar objects and stone carvings to calligraphy and painting.

During his tenure as the Chairman of the Min Chiu Society in Hong Kong, he prepared "The radiant Ming, 1368-1644 : through the Min Chiu Society Collection," which is the most comprehensive exhibition of Ming Dynasty cultural relics in the history of Hong Kong.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Sotheby's in Hong Kong, Xianquxuan is releasing its collection of ancient Chinese jades, which spans from the Neolithic period, through the Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, and Ming Dynasties, all purchased from renowned antique dealers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Notably, the majority of this group will be offered with no reserve.
