Sotheby’s is pleased to present Japanese Woodblock Prints, to be held exclusively online from 12-19 December 2023. The sale begins with an egoyomi, or calendar print by Harunobu, and is followed by works from Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including the artist’s most celebrated design Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave. Hiroshige’s original and graphic depictions of the Japanese landscape, such as Awa Province: Naruto Whirlpools and the Horikiri Iris Garden is succeeded by a selection of works by Kuniyoshi, with an example of one of his iconic triptychs The Ghosts of the Taira Attack Yoshitsune in Daimotsu Bay. The sale closes with prints from 20th century artists such as Yoshida Hiroshi, Kawase Hasui and Munakata Shiko.
