Sotheby’s is excited to offer a group of Bouguereau sketches straight from his studio

Sotheby’s is pleased to present our 19th Century European Art masterpieces, including a selection of idyllic visions of the French rural life by Barbizon artists Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet, as well as an especially distinctive image of a nearly life-size portrait of a young peasant girl by Jules Breton. Also featured are a group of lovely Bouguereau sketches new to the market from a French private collection. Works by Dutch and Italian artists are also represented, as well as a selection of images of and by prominent female artists, including Rosa Bonheur and Elisabeth Sonrel. Frederick Arthur Bridgman’s portrait of an Algerian woman wearing a striking traditional Kabyle costume is an especially interesting addition. Other outstanding works offered are a magnificent view of the holy city of Jerusalem by Orientalist Gustav Bauernfeind, At the Dome of the Rock, a bold, colorful portrait of a carnival scene by Alexis Vollon, and other notable works by Austrian artists Hans Makart and Friedrich von Amerling. Pictures from British sporting artist Thomas Blinks and a selection of marines by Montague Dawson are also included. Giovanni Boldini’s Donna sdraiata in lettura&nbsp;adds an element of exuberant vitality to the exceptional works on offer. Sale Number: N11434
