Coinciding with the re-opening of the National Portrait Gallery in London in June, Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Evening Auction will open with Face to Face: A Celebration of Portraiture, a tightly curated selection of masterpieces exploring the connections between artist and subject. A genre revered within the grand arc of the Western art historical canon, portraiture has been integral to the way artists tell stories about people, history and culture across the ages. Following this opening sequence, the sale is honoured to present Gustav Klimt’s great masterpiece Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a Fan) as the highlight of the 2023 summer auction season in London. Accompanying this iconic painting are major works by artists of the Modern era including Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Rene Magritte and Claude Monet, as well as post-war masters Barbara Hepworth, Frank Auerbach, and Cy Twombly and giants of the late Twentieth Century Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter and Cindy Sherman.
