“Working from outdoors, he looked for scenes he could endow with personal symbolic meaning(s)—to connote human suffering or express the whirling of natural forces."
A selection of meticulously executed Vietnamese silk paintings by a pioneering generation of artists who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine in Hanoi. Intimate vignettes of family life, the love between mother and child, are captured elegantly on this delicate medium.
Lê Thy builds layer upon layer fanning clouds of vegetation, the dense tropical trees appear as clusters shaded florets. Their delicate wavy edges are heightened in gold. The artist is careful to vary their sizes and shades of dark red and black, creating a spatial illusion of depth.
In the far distance the craggy silhouettes of the mountains pierce through the sunset sky. The intensity of the artist’s washes is especially notable imbuing the work with great drama.
Amongst the dense forestry are delicate beams of palm trees that precariously line the small roads that lead to the bottom of the mountains where several houses lie in hidden serenity.
Almost overshadowed by the magnificent natural phenomena, the small village is tucked quietly at the bottom of the valley. The thatched roofs are inconspicuous as they dwell in this oasis. Man and nature live in harmonious balance.
Dwarfed by the magnificent mountainous backdrop, the farmers balance buckets of water and hurry back to the village before the sun sets and the whole landscape falls into the night.
The padi fields are rendered in a striking green colour, Lê Thy mixes soft shades of brown that hint to the fluidity and translucency of the water in the fields.
Golden bamboo leaves are meticulously articulated, they wave gracefully in the wind and are a virtuosic display of technical mastery.
Golden banana leaves seem to wave and invite the viewer into the scene.

“Much of my work deals with various aspects of truth and illusion and their complex interplay with the nature of beauty, dreams, hopes and perfection.”
Meditations on Medium and Form
Leading contemporary voices such as Jigger Cruz, Mit Jai Inn and Jane Lee continue to question and reinvent the meaning of different mediums. Best known for her experimental techniques and inventive use of materials, Jane Lee’s unorthodox approach works to both challenge and re-examine the assumptions and customary functions or meanings assigned to the materials and structures that traditionally uphold the establishment of the painting. By subversively positioning medium and matter as the main subject of her work, Lee looks to the limitless potential of materiality as a vehicle for artistic expression.
Untitled (2014), marks the Thai artist Mit Jai Inn’s auction debut and exemplifies Mit’s unorthodox practice. Based in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, Mit Jai Inn is regarded by many as a seminal figure in Thai contemporary art, defying traditional boundaries in his conceptual and physically enthralling works. Untitled (2014) questions conventional notions of painting and is a product of the artist’s physically rigorous yet meditative working process.
And floats downstream till the current ends
And dips his wing in the orange sun rays
And dares to claim the sky.
