S otheby's is pleased to present Extra!, a sale dedicated to rare and important objects from beyond European borders. In contrast to the traditional cabinets of curiosities known in Europe since the Renaissance, our selection offers the vision of an ideal collection dedicated to atypical objects from the Americas, Africa, Oceania and Asia. A voyage through time and civilization defined by the Extra-ordinary, the bringing together of these objects offers collectors a rich array of iconic pieces from these non-European cultures, dating from Antiquity to Modern Times.
The first part of the sale is devoted to an important European collection of sculptures and ceramics that are emblematic of Pre-Columbian America. This will be followed by a unique journey tracing the links between objects from cultures from sub-Saharan Africa to Oceania and Indonesia, by way of North America, and from Alaska to the Great Plains, on to the ancient cultures of China, the Ordos plateau of Inner Mongolia and the Kingdom of Dian.
