Characterized by bold colors, abstract forms and a dynamic sense of movement, Françoise Gilot’s distinctly modern style found influence in the 20th Century avant-garde movements Cubism and Surrealism. Among the most respected members of the École de Paris, Gilot witnessed and helped define one of the last great periods of European Modern Art, alongside masters including Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Gilot was a devoted documentarian through her paintbrush; her subjects comprised self-portraits, renderings of her children, and intimate scenes from her everyday life, and included themes relating to symbolism and mysticism.
