S otheby’s is thrilled to present Design, an online auction with bidding open from 13 October through 20 October, 2022. Spanning spectacular lighting by Tiffany Studios from the early 20th century to cutting-edge contemporary furniture by some of the best designers of today, the sale offers aspiring and established collectors alike the chance to acquire timeless pieces of design. Featured artists include Émile Gallé, René Lalique, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean-Michel Frank, Harry Bertoia, George Nakashima, Albert Paley, Dale Chihuly and many more.
The first chapter of the sale showcases the artistry of Tiffany Studios, from iconic “Poppy” and “Dragonfly” leaded glass table lamps to deftly decorated favrile glass vases and richly patinated bronze desk accessories.
A refined selection of turn-of-the-century French art glass captures the spirit of the Art Nouveau movement and its floral flourishes, featuring works by leading artists Émile Gallé, Daum and René Lalique.
The sale continues with dynamic decorative arts from the Art Deco period, including elegant furniture by Eugène Printz, Armand-Albert Rateau and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann; lighting by Albert Cheuret and Edgar Brandt; and metalwork by Jean Després.
This chapter exemplifies the span of mid-century design across Europe, from the work of French designers Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Jeanneret, to the Italian design of Osvaldo Borsani and Ico Parisi, to the modern Scandinavian works of Hans Wegner and Poul Henningsen.
The American studio movement is represented across a variety of media, from wood furniture by George Nakashima and Wendell Castle to metal sculpture by Harry Bertoia, and punctuated by two spectacular glass chandeliers by Dale Chihuly.
The sale closes with a curated chapter of contemporary design from the 1970s to today, featuring the inventive and sculptural work of Albert Paley, Elisabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti, the Campana Brothers, Yves Klein, and more.
