Ultra Old Scotch
Age has always been one of the most fascinating concepts in Scotch whisky. The age of the whisky has always been closely associated with both its perceived quality and value, with some collectors embracing the idea of older being better, whilst some enthusiasts debating against the notion. The industry on the other hand, have been promoting the idea of delicious no-age-statement whiskies for years, often due to a shortage of supply in aged stocks. Despite the skepticism, we believe everyone should try a very old scotch once in a while, and we have managed to find some of the oldest whiskies ever produced in these top tier distilleries, including Laphroaig 40 year old and Glenrothes 50 Year old, both being the oldest whiskies from the distillery, so that you can find out the answer yourself.
The Oldest Liquids from Suntory
Until today, Hakushu has yet to release any official bottlings that carry the an age statement higher than 30. Yet these mysterious old liquids do exist in the form of components of what could be the most prestigious bottle of Hakushu as of today, the “First Class”. This bottle was released exclusively for “Moegi No Mura”, a resort complex in Hokuto city near Hakushu. Created by Shinji Fukuyo (福與伸二), it contains liquids distilled back in 1977 and 1988, older than any official Hakushu bottlings, with only 4 bottles ever sold to public, this is considered as a holy grail bottle for Japanese whisky collectors.
Alongside with the Yamazaki Junshin which contains liquid from 1960 and 1964, these bottles are a must have for any old Japanese whisky fanatics.
In its much anticipated first release of Yamazaki 55 Years Old, the House of Suntory pays tribute to the passage of time. Master Blender Keizo Saji was charged to bring his father’s dream to life, creating not only the quality liquid gold but a quintessentially Japanese experience and lifestyle that rooted Suntory Whisky within Japanese culture.
Yamazaki 55 is a blend of precious single malts featuring components distilled in 1960 under the supervision of Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii and then aged in Mizunara casks; and in 1964 under Suntory's Second Master Blender Keizo Saji and then aged in White Oak casks. Suntory's Fifth-Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo worked closely with Third-Generation Master Blender Shingo Torii in deploying their signature art of blending to properly reveal the exceptional depth, complexity and wisdom that is Yamazaki 55. The resulting expression features a deep amber color; robust aroma redolent of sandal wood and well-ripened fruit; sweet, slightly bitter and woody palate; and slightly bitter yet sweet and rich finish.
