otheby’s is pleased to announce Two Centuries: American Art, the first among a series of online auctions dedicated to presenting paintings, sculptures and works on paper that explore the diverse subject matter and artistic styles of American Art throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. This auction will include artworks by prominent Ashcan School artists such as William Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast and Everett Shinn being sold by An American Corporation. Leading the selection of Modernism in the sale is a group of works on paper from the Collection of Carolyn & Roger Horchow and sculptures from the Collection of Joseph & Blanche Blank. Two important portraits featured in this auction include William Merritt Chase’s Portrait of Miss B to be sold by the Richmond Art Museum, Indiana, and Winslow Homer’s portrait of Mrs. Lucy Houghton Valentine from a Private Collection, Palm Beach, Florida. This auction is live for bidding from 3-11 December 2020 and lots will begin closing at 2PM EST on Friday 11 December. Lots can be viewed with a Specialist by appointment.

Unlike the formally posed society portraits of the period, Chase here sought to cultivate a more naturalistic, 'modern' image, which he achieved by presenting his model in a candid manner as she turns to acknowledge the presence of the artist (or viewer) while continuing to adjust her glove.
