Collection Serrurier-Bovy
The Serrurier-Bovy Collection is a testament to the evolution of the artist's work and philosophy.
From his 1895 furniture (with his Artisan series, more traditional but already provocative), to his new series (Pearl, Silex), which is more refined and closer to his ideals, this collection perfectly illustrates the work of an artist attached to creating for a more egalitarian world. The aim, a habitat suitable for everyone which would go on to inspire artists such as Rob Mallet-Stevens, René Herbst, Pierre Chareau, Le Corbusier or Charlotte Perriand.

GUSTAVE SERRURIER-BOVY | VASE, DESIGNED IN 1904
Drawn by René Dulong for his personal flat, this vase perfectly reflects a rational, constructivist and modern creation. Designed in two parts: cut crystal vase and brass support, its elegance lies in its silhouette. Architectural and slender, its decorative elements are arranged with accuracy and exactness. Harmonious in its design, there are, for example, five brass circles and five square cut-outs on each buttress. Its great beauty also lies in the rhythm of the decorative elements. The red copper rivets contrast with the structure while highlighting the quality of the vase's manufacture.

GUSTAVE SERRURIER-BOVY | BEDSIDE TABLE, 1904
Created for a competition, this ingenious bedside table is part of a series of objects intended for inns: the C series. One of the special qualities of this table is its rotating door system in the lower part. This painted iron drum contrasts harmoniously with the structure in raw poplar. The red stencil decoration visually lengthens the table's shape with its graphic pattern. The importance of iron in this table and in the C series is most probably due to the hygienic and solid requirements for furniture destined for an inn.

GUSTAVE SERRURIER-BOVY | SILEX TABLE, CIRCA 1904
The Silex series was created originally for a competition organized during the 1905 Exposition Universelle in Liege. The theme of the contest was to make workers' homes more pleasant to live in. In order to do so the selling price was of course of prime importance. He followed the specifications by using simple materials, such as poplar or pine, and by creating an easy to assemble series. This kit furniture, called Silex, with visible screws, and decorated with stenciled patterns, marks a fundamental step in the field of design, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy managed to create art for all.

GUSTAVE SERRURIER-BOVY | CHAMBRE D'ARTISAN DINNER TABLE, CIRCA 1895
This table, part of the Chambre d’Artisan ensemble, was created for the exhibition La Libre Esthétique of 1895. This ensemble with its simple rustic lines, its simple material, was one of Serrurier Bovy’s first strong social statements. The ensemble was not created for the knowledgeable amateur, but for the newcomer who yearned to be part of the artistic scene. It had an important effect on the society of the time creating a true reflection on elite art versus social art.
