Karuizawa
Karuizawa Distillery was founded in the 1950s and mainly produced malt whisky for use in blends, most of which was aged in sherry casks. The quality of the whisky was considered to be excellent, but as the whisky industry declined in the 1980s and 90s so did Karuizawa, which ultimately led to its demise. What makes this distillery’s whiskies so valuable is the fact that Karuizawa doesn’t exist anymore – it closed its doors in 2000 and was demolished 16 years later.
Headlining the sale is a bottle of Karuizawa 52 Year Old Cask #5627 1960. This iconic bottle represents more than just an incredible whisky from a now closed distillery, it is the oldest Karuizawa to have been released and one of only 41 bottles. Originally released in 2013, this Karuizawa embodies the beautiful Japanese craftsmanship for which the distillery’s releases are known. The wooden case is carved from Wenge in the style of a Japanese puzzle box and the calligraphy on Norito Hasegawa’s artisan paper labels was hand painted in Japan.
Of the 41 bottles that were produced, each is uniquely identified not by a bottle number, but by an individual character or katabori netsuke (形彫根付) that was carved from the oak cask head of cask #5627. This particular bottle is named “Sennin & Toad”.
The dark whisky within this exquisite bottle stands at 52 years old and, at the time of its release, the oldest Japanese Whisky ever bottled. Its strength after such a long cask maturation is still an impressive 51.8% and the sherry influence is clear from the rich, dark hue of the liquid inside.
Presented together at auction for the very first time, the Karuizawa "The Last Masterpiece" #6017 50 Year Old 1970 comprises a pair of bottles from the same cask, the final 50 year old to ever be released from the long-closed distillery. The 211 bottles were divided into two different labels, black and white, and bottled in 2020.
Hanyu, Yamazaki, Hakushu…ands MORE
Aside from Karuizawa, the sale also features rare whisky from some of Japan’s other working and closed distilleries including Hanyu, Yamazaki, Taketsuru and Chichibu.
The Ichiro’s Malt Cards Series, distilled at Hanyu distillery, is the most collectible series of Japanese whiskies ever produced. Based on a pack of playing cards, each label features a different card, and the whiskies were hand chosen by Ichiro Akuto, Grandson of Isouji Akuto, who founded the Hanyu Distillery in the early 1940s.
With no fewer than 19 bottles from the series included within this sale, the standout is certainly the rarest of them all, The Hanyu Monochrome Joker, the last and very final release of the series and with only 241 bottles produced, this is undoubtedly one of the most iconic bottles in Japanese Whisky history.
The “Vintage Malt” series is another highly sought-after series within the realm of collecting Japanese whisky. Released mostly in the early 2000s, this series houses some of the oldest distillates you could find in both Yamazaki and Hakushu, as far back as 1977. The bottles are all bottled at high strength 56%, an uncommon practice back then, and the liquid inside are highly rated by connoisseurs around the world.
Scotch Whisky
The Macallan The Reach 81 Year Old, the oldest whisky in the world, is a precious whisky encased in a decanter created from mouth-blown, hot glass, cradled on a bronze sculpture of three hands.
Sculptor Saskia Robinson created the timeless sculpture featuring three hands, representing characters in The Macallan’s history to house the decanter.
One commemorates the Distillery workers of 1940 who crafted the spirit into existence, and another is the hand of one-time chairman, Allan Shiach, whose grandfather headed the company when the spirit was consigned to its cask. The third is that of today’s Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, who carefully selected the 1940 cask used to create The Reach.
An exceptional cabinet crafted using wood from a fallen elm tree which is thought to have been on The Macallan Estate in 1940, the year the spirit was distilled, houses the decanter. Reflecting its rarity and significance, the handcrafted quartet of liquid, glass, bronze and wood was brought together by Scottish artisan craftspeople as a fitting tribute to this very special whisky.

Aside from Macallan, the major highlights come from Bowmore Distillery, the first distillery on Islay and famed for their legendary 1960s vintages.
The Bowmore Black Sherry Cask 42 Year Old, Bowmore Gold Fine Oak Cask 44 Year Old and Bowmore White Bourbon Cask 43 Year Old were all distilled in 1964, during what is considered the greatest era of production at Bowmore. Showcases Bowmore's ability to create complex, long-aged whiskies, each with its own unique cask influences, the trilogy whiskies have rated amongst the highest Scotch whiskies ever bottled.
Also from 1964 is the slightly older Bowmore 46 Year Old Fino Sherry Cask 1964, a stunningly presented decanter of which only 72 bottles were ever made. This is the first time that this bottle has come to auction at Sotheby’s.
Springbank Distillery is often thought of as one of the real enthusiasts due to its small production capacity and high quality. The Springbank Millennium Collection, offered here in full, consists of whiskies ranging from 25-50 years of age and was released sequentially over a period of time, with the final bottling being one of the oldest Springbank releases ever.
