Provenance
The Collector
This extraordinary collection of wines was put together by a private European collector, who amassed this cellar over many decades. He travelled throughout Europe’s best vineyard areas, developing personal relationships with the finest producers and wine growers.
The Wines
The wine collector purchased the vast majority of the wines on release from European agents and sourced directly from the estates themselves, ensuring impeccable provenance.
The Cellar
The wines have been stored in a private cellar in Northern Europe, with consistent cold and humid cellar conditions, perfect for long-term ageing of fine wine.
Inspection and Shipping
In October 2020, Sotheby’s Wine Specialists carefully inspected and catalogued each bottle. The wines were then shipped from Europe in a temperature-controlled container to Crown Wine Cellars in Hong Kong.
The late, great Henri Jayer died during the 2006 harvest but his influence and principles live on with those in Burgundy who saw how he worked and learnt so much from him. Undoubtedly, he is also revered among wine lovers who have his wines in their cellars. For decades he managed the estates of others as well as his own vineyards. He studied oenology in Dijon and particularly appreciated the chance to taste wines other than from Burgundy, thus enhancing his overall knowledge of wine making. From the beginning, Henri Jayer had great respect for the soil and for the grapes, his raw material, preferring 'sélection massale' to clones, as then he could produce small berries with resistant skins. He loved old vines, if possible with an average of 50 years, and this enabled him to limit production without recourse to green harvesting. An enemy of any form of 'greenness', he always destalked and was an early supporter of sorting tables. He picked very ripe and used natural yeasts. Cold macerations before fermentation and new Tronçais oak barrels were a rule of thumb, always marrying modernity with tradition. We certainly owe much to Henri Jayer, particularly the 'discovery' of Cros Parantoux, which was lying fallow, requiring him to clear it of rocks with a wheelbarrow! To appreciate the great wines of Henri Jayer at their best, remember that they normally have a good deal of sediment, so rest them well after any movement.

The Domaine, as it is known, is iconic. Much more important, it also produces the most extraordinary wines in Burgundy - and it has been doing so for a long time. The generations responsible for the Domaine change, but the terroir remains. And these are very special vineyard parcels indeed, married to meticulous care and philosophy leading to low yields and healthy, ripe grapes, at whatever cost. From the 1990s, vineyard policy has been organic, with co-owner Aubert de Villaine monitoring everything with his usual attention to detail. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines evolve and develop dimensions in a way that resembles a mosaic - points of bouquet and flavour making up a harmonious whole that becomes more beautiful as it unfolds in the glass. Yes, these are hedonistic wines and yes, they are not like any other. The trick is in capturing what these remarkable plots of vines can give and letting them express themselves through minimum intervention and enlightened nurturing.

Château d'Yquem 2001Pierre Lurton did the blending for this vintage - and what a beginning. It is just so lemony on the nose, an amazing explosion of lemon curd aromas and flavours. Extraordinary creamy brilliance - like a diamond. Unbelievably pure and 'magnetic'. Stunningly fresh and immediate. Seamless silky opulence with perfect acidity and balance. Yes, I admit the obvious - I simply adore this. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1996In 2019, this is an absolute knock-out for its glorious, creamy elegance, with both floral and citrus notes and fabulous freshness and silkiness. The balance is perfect, not the most enormous Yquem, but breathtakingly beautiful - my kind of Yquem. We had it with Gabriel Coulet's incomparable Roquefort, which has the same creaminess and was an incredible combination. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1990In 2018, this may now be at peak in bottle form, or on a plateau, with the enormous sweetness, rivalling that of 1929. Rich in texture, ultra peachy and treacly, this is an Yquem to wallow in. Large, and very large, formats of the 1990 have more freshness, but this is super-luscious. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1986The most glorious honied mayblossom nose. Heavenly orange zest flavour. So rounded, so rich, so tropically luscious. I think this has become even more awesome with time. It can be tarry on the nose, with bitter orange zests. Tremendous grapefruit lusciousness on the palate - now one sees why the late Jean-Pierre Moueix, a great connoisseur of Yquem, compared it with the 1937. Pure beauty as it develops in the glass. Château d'Yquem 1985The harvest lasted from 1st October to 19th December, the longest and latest vintage in the history of Yquem. Great, beautiful, warm and generous. This fruity Yquem just hugs you. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1983At an incredible Fête des Rois dinner in 2020, drunk of course with La Galette des Rois which is my favourite 'sweet nothing' of all time! And this bottle was the best 1983 I have ever had, gorgeous in its freshness and citric beauty. There is a real peachiness to it, with silky purity and endless dimension of flavour. Some 1983s have a tarry botrytis element, but here there is zingy, zesty fruit to match the sweetness, with a finish that defies the clock. We were all stunned - this wine is destined for eternal life. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1979Barley sugar nose. Real orange barley sugar taste. Very soft and mouth-coating. So fresh and young. Delicious but, obviously, simplistic in comparison with the best years. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1976The harvest this year all came in from the second wave of picking. In 2014, such raisiny splendour, all apricots and sultanas, plus rich, creamy texture and a glorious walnut finish. The perfect comparison with the powerful 1975 - a judgement of Paris! Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1967am lucky enough to drink this quite often and it is a vinous monument. There is always a real bouquet of developed botrytis and a sense of 'torched' crème brûlée, dried apricots and 'raisins de Corinthe' together with orange zests and beautiful acidity. I have also noted smokiness and hazelnuts. My most recent tasting showed tea, oranges, clementines and allspice and was absolutely fascinating. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1959This was a quick, early vintage at Yquem. I have tasted it many times and it is always an enormous treat, sumptuous, mouth-coating and full of apricots, currants and raisins. It has lavender on the bouquet as well as that hugely rich, candied peel taste. Amazing depth and broadness. Excellent tarry acidity. Lavender flowers at the end. A star among Yquems. Château d'Yquem 1953This has amazingly low sugar for Yquem (71g) but high alcohol (14.4%). Unbelievably fragrant bouquet of orange blossom and heather in flower. Tarry/sweet taste. A touch of salt in there too, as one sometimes sees in mature vintages. Raisins finish, rich and lingering. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Château d'Yquem 1945I have had this many times - don't ask! Huge sugar, high alcohol wine. It was the year of an extremely rare frost on 2 May. There were 6 'waves' of picking over 6 weeks, similar to 2005. Wonderful nose of the caramel crust of a crème brûlée and Seville oranges. Drink with a cream made with ground almonds. So multi-dimensional, deep and intense. The volatility varies with the bottles, but the majestic quality does not. Last tasted from magnum in 2007. Incredible Seville oranges bouquet. The most pure, figgy fruit of any 1945 I have had. Pomegranates. So much balance and fabulously complete and complex. Endless on the palate. On this showing, not 3 star, but 4 star. Château d'Yquem 1929Real molasses and treacle on the nose, with walnuts, raisins and sultanas. Vanilla pod and a whiff of coffee. Heavenly molasses on the palate with a touch of vanilla. Château d'Yquem 1921A pinnacle of its century. The harvest was very early, with 6 weeks of picking. The serious frost earlier reduced the crop significantly. The grapes dried on the vine, giving concentration but conserving acidity. The alcohol is surprisingly low at 12. 5% but the sugar is high. Amber brown with a yellow rim. A bouquet of orange nectar. A whiff of woodsmoke and bananas, currants, nuts and raisins. A lovely grapefruity flavour. Lavender honey - the lavender is very strong. Tangerines and vanilla. Finish of crushed nuts in honey. This seems indestructible, just so rich and essencelike it almost cannot age. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
