A Hellenistic Marble Head of a Ptolemaic Ruler

circa 3rd Century B.C.

turned to his left, with parted lips and almond-shaped eyes, the hair probably once completed in stucco, a series of small holes framing the temples and forehead, the neck carved for insertion.

Height 32 cm.

French private collection, acquired on the French art market on February 4th, 1978

The small holes point to a metal attachment, probably a wreath. Cf. a Ptolemaic ruler portrait in a private collection (H. Kyrieleis, Bildnisse der Ptolemäer, 1975, p. 174f., no. H1, pl. 56f.), which was also carved for insertion and shows a similar treatment of the back.
