Natural pearl and diamond devant-de-corsage, 1890s

Composed of three openwork panels with lattice and scrollwork decoration, set throughout with cushion-shaped, circular-cut and rose diamonds, each with a central natural pearl, connected by knife edge link swags set with circular-cut and cushion-shaped diamonds, width approximately 188mm, accompanied by three brooch fittings.
Accompanied by SSEF report no. 124319, stating that the three pearls were found to be natural, saltwater.
The Boreel family is a Dutch noble house descending from the 15th century Italian banker Rufino Borelli who was active in Ghent. Willem Boreel (1591-1668) was knighted by James I in 1645 as he played an instrumental role in mitigating the commercial differences between the English and Dutch East India Companies. He would go on to serve as the Dutch ambassador to France. For generations, members of the Boreel family held important public offices within the Dutch Republic.
Following the creation of the Dutch Kingdom in 1815, the Boreel family was elevated to the Dutch peerage. In the late 19th century when the devant-de-corsage was created, several women of the Boreel family held positions as ladies-in-waiting to Queen Emma and her daughter Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, testament to their respected status in society. The corsage ornament has been passed down through the family ever since.
