Herders and Cattle in a River Landscape

Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk, within brown ink framing lines

167 by 243 mm

Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), London (L.1433)

This attractive, freely executed drawing, in which the artist has made various changes of detail from the initial, rapid sketch in chalk, is particularly close to the style of Adriaen van de Velde in aspects such as the very broad washes, combined with some judicious outlining in pen, that we see in the trees, and the distinctive facial physiognomy and figure types, especially in the boy to the left.

While it is not a direct study for any known painting by the artist, there are some general similarities of composition with works such as the 1671 canvas, Herders and cattle at a ford, in Munich.1
