Nuit Profonde, executed in 1991, attests to Chu Teh-Chun's great interest in natural phenomena. He focuses on the representation of a nocturnal landscape which, far from embodying darkness, is encompassed by flashes of light. In 1990, the artist creates a series of works that explore the relationship between light and shadow. This painting thus crystallizes a real mastery of chiaroscuro.
Inspired by Nicolas de Staël's compositions, which solely capture the contours of reality, as well as the resonance of forms, this abstract landscape is part of an approach to nature that is both emotional and sensory. Memories and perceptions are intertwined within this work. The artist states “When I paint a painting, it always feels like part of my lifelong journey. Sometimes, it's an irresistible, momentary impulse; other times, it's a memory from long ago, perhaps even something forgotten, that the canvas called back to mind”. Teh-Chun represents the immensity of the sky to which he adds sparks of light evocative of birth. The artist translates the essence of the night, a period when the world is transformed and regenerated.
This work is also crossed by a free and spontaneous gesture giving rise to abstract and fluid forms. The brush glides over the canvas creating curves evocative of the dance of the stars or the movement of clouds. The harmonious and balanced composition invites the viewer to dive into a meditative universe.
" In my paintings, colour and line are never coincidental. They work together toward the same goals: to conjure light, and to evoke image and poetry.”
Thus, this nocturnal landscape is evocative of a deep serenity and a timeless poetry that transcend the boundaries of perception.
