The katana attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo

The wakizashi attributed to Sue Nio

Nanbokucho - Muromachi period, 14th - 15th century


Sugata [configuration]: both shinogi-zukuriiori-mune, deep tori-zori, chu-kissaki

Kitae [forging pattern]: the katana with ko-itame hada, jinie attached, some chikei; the wakizashi with ko-itame and mokume hada mixed

Hamon [tempering pattern]: the katana with suguha hamon in nie with small ashi; the wakizashi similarly forged in ko-niedeki

Boshi [tip]: possible kaeri to the boshi

Nakago [tang]: osurigage three mekugi-ana ; the wakizashi one mekugi-ana

Habaki [collar]: the katana copper double clad; the wakizashi copper single clad

Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 70 cm., 27½ in.; 46.4 cm., 18¼ in.

Sori [curvature]: 2 cm., ¾ in.; 1.2 cm., ½ in.

Saki-haba [width at the yokote]: Both 1.9 cm., ¾ in.

Moto-haba [width at the machi]: Both 2.8 cm., 1 in.


The katana accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu hozon token [Sword Especially Worthy of Preserving], attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo, Nanbokucho period, no. 1011172 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Reiwa 1 (2019).


The wakizashi accompanied by a certificate of registration as Hozon token [Sword Worthy of Preserving], attributing the blade to Sue Nio, Muromachi period, no. 3022280 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Reiwa 1 (2019).


The koshirae accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu hozon tosogu [Sword Mount Especially Worthy of Preserving], no. 225487 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Heisei 12 (2019).
