A very fine sujibachi [helmet with raised ridges]

Edo period, 19th century
the very fine sixty-two plate russet iron bowl with raised ridges of goshozan form, terminating in a copper-gilt five-stage tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, russet iron mabisashi [peak], stenciled Dutch leather turnbacks applied with copper-gilt ine mon [rice plant crests], copper-gilt fukurin [ornamental border], four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with close-spaced lacing in orange braid, gilt metal maedate [forecrest] in the form of stylised rice plants
The bowl to peak: 25.5 cm., 10 in.
The shikoro to peak: 37 cm., 14½ in.
