A rare and important kawari kabuto [unsually shaped helmet]

Muromachi period, mid-16th century


the russet iron bowl with raised undulating ridges decorated in gold lacquer in the form of stylised lotus leaves in decay, terminating in a small tehen kanamono floret, double russet iron and red lacquer mabisashi [peak], small plain black lacquer fukigaeshi [turnbacks], four-tiered black lacquer itamono-jikoro [solid plate neck guard] with close-spaced lacing in blue braid


The bowl to peak: 27 cm., 10½ in.

The shikoro to peak: 30 cm., 12 in.
