Description

SALISBURY, ROBERT CECIL, 1ST EARL OF

LETTER SIGNED ("RO: CECYLL"), TO THOMAS SACKVILLIE, LORD TREASURER BUCKHURST

informing him that he has disbursed £200 to Lady Barbara Ruthven on Buckhurst's behalf ("...her necessitys weare such as she could hardly stay any longer for it...") and requesting repayment through the bearer of this letter, with a postscript signed by Roger Houghton acknowledging that he has been assigned this duty, 1 page, Windsor, 26 June 1603, integral address leaf, docketed

Robert Cecil, son of Lord Burghley, was James VI/I's key minister in the early years of his reign. Barbara Ruthven, to whom £200 had been granted by the crown, was an impoverished Scottish courtier whose fortunes had been ruined in 1600 when her brother, the Earl of Gowrie, was killed in a botched attempt to kidnap King James.
