Rackham, Arthur
The Fairy Tales of the Brother's Grimm. London: Constable & Company, 1909
Large 4to. Deluxe limited edition, no. 684 of 750 copies signed by Rackham, color frontispiece and 39 mounted color illustrations, with tissue guards, uncut, top edge gilt; very light spotting to tissue guards. Red morocco, blocked in gilt, spine gilt; the slightest wear to joints, a fine copy.
The deluxe limited edition of Grimm's fairy tales, signed by Arthur Rackham. One of Rackham's most iconic works, The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm was reprinted from the 1900 edition, but with additional illustrations and larger pages.
This work was the gateway for Rackham's unprecedented commercial success as an illustrator. It was significant in offering forty colored illustrations thanks to developments in printing technology. Rackham's deluxe limited editions became immensely popular as Christmas gift books during the Edwardian period.
"Rackham was, without doubt, one of the finest illustrators of the century." Sutherland (1989)
