One of the leading southern German sculptors of the early 16th century, Jörg Lederer established an influential workshop in Kaufbeuren, a town in the Allgäu region of Swabia. He specialised in producing altarpieces for both local patrons and further afield, including South Tirol, where several of his works survive. This charming Virgin and Child enthroned displays numerous stylistic features associated with Lederer and his workshop. Her prototype can be found in Lederer's Madonna in the church of St George in Auerberg (op. cit., cat. no. A1, figs. 116-117), which shows the same inclination of the head, doll-like facial features with plump lips, as well as a similarly arranged veil, a hallmark of the sculptor. Compare also the pose of the Christ Child.
