The form of this vessel is based on pou ritual vessels of the Eastern Zhou through Han dynasties, an example of which can be found in the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (acc. no. B60B1031). Only a few archaistic vessels of this type have been recorded, and the present lot appears to be the only example cast with an inscription. Compare a bronze vessel of this type from the Prince Kung Collection, sold at American Art Galleries, New York, 28th February 1913, lot 306; and another sold in these rooms, 15th September 2018, lot 1077.
