A RARE 'JIZHOU' 'PAPERCUT' 'DEER' BOWL
SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY
南宋 吉州窰剪紙貼花鹿紋盌
the deep flared sides resting on a low foot, the interior resist-decorated with a pair of leaping deer and floral sprays against a speckled beige-brown ground, the exterior glazed a rich coffee-brown with tortoiseshell markings, the glaze stopping above the footring to reveal the buff body

Compare a similar bowl with three resist-decorated leaping deer in the National Museum of History, Taipei, exhibited in Good Fortune throughout History- An exhibition of black glaze and porcelain from Tzu-chou and Ji-chou kilns, National Museum of History, Taipei, 2004, cat. no. 30, illustrated alongside a bowl with a design of floral sprays similar to those on the present bowl, from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The dating of this lot is consistent with the result of a thermoluminescence test, Oxford Authentication Ltd., no. P102g77.
