The Dutch Golden Age painter Pieter de Neyn was known for his landscape scenes, which often have been confused with his contemporary Jan van Goyen. In this composition, the river adds an element of serenity with its calming colors. Meanwhile, the bright, brick-colored cottages and their intertwined roofs add an element of chaos, which perfectly balances the composition.
