Joseph Carroll was born in December 4, 1779 in Walpole, Massachusetts to parents Joseph Carrel (1755-1795) and Esther Pond (1759-1834). He was a merchant in Walpole and married Asenath Carpenter (1785-1862) on September 18, 1803; they had ten children between 1806 and 1825: Twins Joseph and Harriet, Anne, Sanford, Ester Pond, Edmond, Susan Carpenter, Julius, Francis Emily, and James Edson.

The back of the portrait is covered with wallpaper, since Doyle manufactured wallpaper from 1796-1798 before he made portraits.
