Marie Guérin was the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Paulin Guérin (1783-1855) a history and portrait painter of notable figures of the nineteenth century including King Louis XVIII.  In 1828, Paulin Guérin was appointed the director of drawing and painting at the Maisons d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur à Saint-Denis, a school established by Napoleon for the education of girls whose father, grandfather or great-grandfather had been awarded the Légion d'honneur. Marie also taught at the school and while the identity of the sitter of the present work remains unknown, it illustrates both the influence of her father’s training and her own distinct, talent.
