Purchased from the artist by William Henry Doeg, his sale Christie’s, London, 31 March 1920, lot 77 bought ‘Sampson’ however the picture was still in the possession of Doeg's grand-daughter Mrs Hammond-Headey in 1971, her sale Sotheby's, London, 17 March 1971, lot 129
