In 1989, Patek Philippe celebrated its 150th anniversary. In commemoration of this significant occasion, a series of 2200 wristwatches were released in the brand’s first ever limited edition, the reference 3960. This reference featured “Officer” style case backs, inspired by historic "hunter" and "half hunter" cased pocket watches which were hinged in order to protect the dial and movement. In this case, Patek Philippe has used the hinged case back to hide commemorative engraving as a secret detail only to be admired with intent.
Produced in three metals: white gold, platinum and the present yellow gold, the black Breguet numerals and hands contrast starkly against a gorgeous porcelain white dial. This watch will appeal to all discerning collectors of classic dress watches with its beautiful Breguet numerals and hands, and adds a touch of eccentricity and historical value with the hinged case back.
