1998 New York Yankees World Series Champions Trophy Presented to Coach Tony Cloninger - Team of the Century
The 1998 New York Yankees swept the San Diego Padres in the World Series, which was part of a run where the Joe Torre-led Bombers won four World Series titles in five seasons. This 1998 team won a record 125 games during the season (including postseason) and were dominant throughout. Presented is an actual Yankees championship Commissioner's trophy presented to Yankee bullpen coach Tony Cloninger, which was awarded to the former Braves, Reds and Cardinals hurler following the 1998 Fall Classic. The oversized prize is set upon a 7 ¼-inch diameter base, which contains a gold band reading, "WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS – NEW YORK YANKEES 1998 TONY CLONINGER, COACH." This trophy contains a gold-colored band, has a gold-colored baseball at its base and a crown at the top. The front of the display includes original press pins of the two World Series teams, Balfour made for the Yankees and unknown (no markings) for the Padres. Surrounding the base are 30 gold-colored flags representing the names of each Major League team. Left to right these flags begin with Anaheim and finish with Arizona on the right. This amazing piece of hardware weighs approximately 20 pounds and measures 12 inches tall at its peak. The trophy is in good condition.
