Intricately carved around the body with taotie masks, this censer encapsulates the Qianlong Emperor’s devotion towards China’s past and his efforts to revive celebrated traditions. Compare a related vessel and cover, flanked by upright handles with loose rings, from the collection of the late Countess Mountbatten of Burma, illustrated in Dennis Holman, Lady Louis, Life of the Countess of Burma, London, 1952, pp. 8-9, and sold in these rooms, 24th March 2021, lot 227; and another fang ding, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, published in Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete Collection of Jades in China], vol. 6, Shijiazhuang, 1993, pl. 342.
