Italian, probably 16th century

This beautifully engraved cameo recalls a number of gems dated to the 16th century. Compare with the late 16th-early 17th-century cameo of an African man in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. no. K-6495), or a glyptic in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. XII 132).
