Born in Antwerp in 1534, Sir Gabriel Poyntz was the lord of the manor of North Ockendon, an estate which remained in the possession of the Essex branch of the Poyntz family from circa 1300 to 1725. He was knighted at Whitehall by King James I on May 30, 1604 and was twice appointed the High Sheriff of Essex. This stately portrait was painted in 1568, the year in which he was married, and was possibly commissioned to commemorate the occasion. Inscribed at upper left above the heraldic crest is the Poyntz family motto: “Crainte Refrainte” (Fear Repressed).
