Art market, Florence;

Where acquired by the present collectors, circa 1970s.

Filippo Lauri's refined and elegant style is immediately apparent in this small-scale cabinet picture executed in 1674. Lauri initially trained under with his Flemish father, Balthasar Lauwers (Italianized as "Lauri") and then under his brother-in-law Angelo Caroselli and Pietro da Cortona. The present composition, signed using the artist's initials on the bookmark at left, is known in at least two other versions, one in the Galleria Corsini, Rome (inv. no. 378) and another formerly in the collection of Countess A. Apponyi, Marquess of Hamilton.
