This work is based on a composition, which is now lost, by Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685), last recorded in the 1659 inventory of the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1614–1662).1 Numerous period copies survive including one in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, attributed to Anthonie Victoryns (before 1620–1656).2
