This style of border was used in the 1750s and 60s and was popularised by Madame de Pompadour and her circle. A service of this pattern was also presented to Carl Theodore, Elector of the Palatine, hence the pattern is sometimes refered to as Wittelsbach chequers. For a discussion of these services see David Peters, Sèvres plates and services of the 18th Century, Little Berkhamstead, 2005, pp. 337-8, no. 62-1.
