Northern Italian School, 16th Century

Paintings executed in tempera on canvas were relatively rare in the Italian Renaissance, and were often reserved for processional banners for religious celebrations. The present lot may be one such example, as was the banner by Luca Signorelli sold at Sotheby's New York, 26 January 2012, lot 15.¹
