The artist of this delightful sketch has continued to elude scholars, and it has been associated with a number of different artists in recent years. It is clear, however, that is inspired both in style and subject matter by François Boucher, and likely comes from an artist working closely in his ambit. Another version of the composition is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille1 and though it was formerly attributed to Noël Hallé, it is now catalogued as "attributed to Boucher."
