Description
Property of a Gentleman
Childe Hassam
1859 - 1935
Central Park West at 82nd Street
inscribed Childe Hassam and dated 1894 (lower left)
oil on canvas
14⅞ by 17¼ in.
37.7 by 43.8 cm.
Executed in 1894.
The co-authors of the Hassam Catalogue Raisonné project believe the present lot was originally titled Dusk, Central Park West, 1894. That picture, unlocated for decades, is recorded as measuring 24 x 17-1/2 inches. The authors believe that Dusk, Central Park West was cut down in size many years ago, at both top and bottom, and re-signed by another hand, resulting in the present work, now titled Central Park West at 82nd Street.
