G.C. Williamson, Catalogue of the Collection of Miniatures, The Property of John Pierpont Morgan, London 1906, vol. I, no. 55, pl. XIV, no.1
Hilliard's decision to show the sitter half-length allows him to fully explore his sitter’s sumptuous dress, which is decorated with silver and jewels. Although there is a portrait in the Victoria and Albert Museum which shows Elizabeth’s Lord Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton full-length wearing equally opulent clothing (acc. no. P. 138-1910), this compositional format is rare in the artist's oeuvre.
