Description

Robert Sweet

Flora Australasica; or, a selection of handsome, or curious plants, natives of New Holland, and the South Sea Islands... London: James Ridgway, 1827-1828

8vo (240 x 154 mm.), 56 hand-coloured engraved plates by S. Watts from drawings by E.D. Smith, contemporary brown diced calf, rebacked, sprinkled edges, final gathering splitting, scattered spotting, some transfer from plates onto facing leaves

The seeds from which these plants were propagated in English nurseries were mostly collected in Australia by William Baxter on behalf of a Mr F. Henchman. "The greater part are handsome evergreen shrubs, and many produce sweet- scented flowers; and as they are generally of free growth, and easily managed, they may be considered as the most desirable plants for cultivation" (Sweet).
