A CHINESE INSCRIBED SILK AND METAL THREAD CARPET


circa 1880


the field embroidered in 'gilt' metal thread, with silk pile,with an inscription panel, the inscription reading:  Jing ren gong bei yong (For the usage of Palace of Great Benevolence)


approximately 250 by 158cm; 8ft. 2in., 5ft. 2in.

The Palace of Great Benevolence is one of the 'Six Eastern Palaces' in the Forbidden City; these buildings originally provided living quarters for the imperial concubines. The Emperor Kangxi (r. 1661-1722) was born in the Palace of Great Benevolence; it was later used by the Emperor's wives.
